Walnuts Benefits


Walnuts are rounded, single seeded fruit of the walnut tree. It is enclosed in a green, leathery and fleshy husk. After harvesting the husk is removed and walnut is obtained. These delicious nuts are packed with so many essential vitamins and minerals which maintains the overall health of the person.

Walnuts are also called as Akhrot in Hindi and they are used as a snack. They are highly beneficial for the cardiovascular health. They are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E and potassium. Omega 3 fatty acids increase the level of HDL which is the heart friendly cholesterol and decrease the LDL which is the bad cholesterol. Vitamin E present in the walnuts prevents the plaque formation in the arteries. Potassium regulates the blood pressure and thus we can say that walnuts are good for the heart health.

Walnuts can also be useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes if taken with a balanced diet. They contain good fats which improve the functioning of blood vessels and insulin. They are also rich in antioxidants which prevent the occurrence of many diseases including the cancers. These healthy nuts provide the protection against the breast and prostate cancers.

Walnuts contain the proteins, fiber and omega 3 fatty acids which keeps you full for the longer times and thus help in the process of weight loss. Walnuts also contain the B complex vitamins which are required for the healthy skin, hair and almost for the each and every part of the body.

Walnuts can be an excellent food for the brain. The omega 3 fatty acids present in them are required for the proper functioning of the brain. They are also high in iron so beneficial for the people suffering from iron deficiency anaemia.

Walnuts are beneficial for the people suffering from insomnia. They contain a hormone called as melatonin which regulates the sleep. Along with this walnuts also contain the phytonutrients like selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iron and calcium which improve the functioning of the body. They also prevent the occurrence of diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart problems.

Walnuts are also high in vitamin E which is a powerful antioxidant and also required for the healthy skin and hair. Walnuts are also rich in ellagic acid which controls the replication of cancerous cells and it also have the anti bacterial, anti inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Walnuts are also high in dietary fiber so can also be beneficial for the digestive system of the body.

Oil obtained from the walnuts also has the medicinal value. To get the oil walnuts are dried and then cold pressed. This oil is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is perfect for the salad dressings, to flavor the fish and steaks and to toss with the pasta.

Walnuts can be a great food for snacking. So rather than taking chips and French fries one can have walnuts which give comparatively more health benefits.
