Typhoid Diet

Typhoid is the fever which is transmitted by ingesting food or water which has been contaminated with the bacteria salmonella typhi. Temperature usually remains high for about 12-14 days and usually rises in the evening and drops by the morning.  Fever comes down gradually by the fourth week. Typhoid can result in the abdominal pain, severe diarrhea and can also lead to the loss of appetite. The patient will also feel tired, cold and weak. During the episode of typhoid the patient should consume the food which is easy to digest and healthy. A loss of fluids and electrolytes is also very prominent in the typhoid. Following are some of the dietary recommendations which can be quite useful for the treatment of typhoid.


 In the fevers the metabolic rate of the body is high so the energy requirements will also be high. Take the energy from the simple carbohydrates as they are easy to digest. Small meals should be taken at the frequent intervals because the body can’t digest the heavy foods. Porridge, rice, potatoes, salmonella are the some of the easily digestible carbohydrates and can be given to the patient. Fruit custard can also be a very good option because of the presence of simple carbohydrates.


Proteins intake should be moderate to high. Initially give the proteins in less quantities because they take time to digest but they are also required for the wear and tear of the tissues and to recover fast from the illness. Low fat milk and eggs can be very good options for proteins.


Since there is an injury to the intestinal lining so the dietary fiber should be excluded from the diet. All the salads and high fiber fruits should be avoided. If the condition is more serious then the stewed apple and banana can be the best fruits. As they are easy to digest and doesn’t irritate the intestinal lining.


During the typhoid fever there is a lot of electrolyte loss which can lead to dehydration. So to compensate that adequate fluid intake is must for the person. Coconut water is a natural drink which is also very healthy for the patient suffering from typhoid.


During the infections and fever the requirement of vitamin A, B and C increase. Use of antibiotics also interferes with the synthesis of vitamin B in the intestines. So take these supplements along with diet to avoid the deficiencies.


Tea and coffee should also be avoided as the caffeine present in them can be a stimulant and can irritate the lining of stomach.


Also avoid the strongly flavored vegetables like capsicum, cabbage, turnip, reddish, garlic and onion.


Avoid too much of fried foods if suffering from the typhoid. These foods are heavy to digest and can cause indigestion and flatulence. Consumption of heavy foods can also lead to nausea and vomiting


Too much of spicy foods should be avoided. These can also irritate the lining of stomach and can be the chemical irritants.
