Health Benefits of Onion

Onion is a pungent, edible vegetable in the lily family. It is one of the oldest vegetables cultivated from prehistoric times. It stands out as an exceptional food because of its strong flavor and aroma. Compared to other fresh vegetables, it is relatively high in food value because it is moderate in protein and rich in calcium and riboflavin.


When onions are cut, an enzyme alliinases breaks the amino acid sulphoxides to generate sulphenic acids. It causes the lachrymal glands in the eyes to become irritated and release tears. Refregenerating the onion for 30 mins before cutting or by keeping it under the water slows down the reaction and chemical changes that take place in the onion.


The therapeutic properties of onion are innumerable. It has been used as food remedy from time immemorial. Several parts of the plant have been used in the traditional medicines. The seeds of onion increase the semen and cures dental worms and urinary diseases. The stalks of the onion are a source of vitamin A, thiamine and ascorbic acid.


The curative properties of onion are:


Expectorant properties is said to be present in the onion. It liquefies phlegm and prevents further formation. It has been used as a food remedy to treat cold, cough, bronchitis and influenza. It is one of the safest preventive medicines against common cold during winter. 


According to latest research of Russian doctors- A person eating raw onion everyday by mastication process will be protected from tooth disorders. 


It is beneficial for the treatment of anemia because of its easy assimilable iron content. 


The onions are valuable for heart disease as they correct thrombosis and reduce blood cholesterol level. According to recent researches in the West, the above benefits is possible due to presence of essential oil, aliypropyl disulphide, catechol, protocatechnic acid, thiocyanate, calcium, iron, phosphorous and vitamins in onion. It balances the triglycerides levels, lowers the LDL cholesterol level and increases the HDL level. 


Onion is one of the most important aphrodisiac foods. It increases the libido and strengthens the reproductory organs. 


Dip cotton wool in onion juice and put into the ears; it is a popular Russian remedy for hearing problems. 


Onions contain flavonoids such as quercetin which reduces the risk of colon cancer. It suppresses the growth of tumor cells and thus protects the cells of the colon from damaging effects of cancer producing substances. Onion like its cousin garlic, reduces the incidence of cancer like prostate, renal, breast, larynx, pharynx, esophagus and oral cavity. 


It has got powerful antiseptic properties. It heals the wounds and relieves the pain. 


Onions are valuable in treating piles.


The onion can be used in innumerable ways. The bulbs can be eaten as raw or they may be cooked and eaten as vegetable. They are used in soups, sauces and for seasoning many foods. The immature plant of onion known as spring onion is widely used in Chinese cooking.
