Benefits of Mushrooms

Mushrooms are the edible fungi with numerous health benefits. They are low in calories, low in fat and contain no cholesterol. They also contain vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, D, B12, riboflavin, niacin and Pantothenic acid. Minerals present in mushrooms are calcium, iron, potassium and selenium. In India mainly three types of mushrooms namely button, oyster and straw mushrooms are commercially grown. Health benefits of mushrooms are:

Mushrooms have zero cholesterol, fats and they are very low in calories. So a very good food for the weight loss and to prevent heart diseases. 

Mushrooms contain ergothioneine which is an antioxidant and helps to protect the body from the adverse effects of free radicals and also helps to boost the immunity. 

Mushrooms are very good for diabetes as they contain no fats, no cholesterol and very low in carbohydrates plus they also contain natural insulin which helps to breakdown the carbohydrate into simpler forms. 

Mushrooms contain potassium, and very low in sodium which helps to manage the high blood pressure and preventing the chances of heart attack and stroke. Mushrooms also have copper which have cardio protective properties. 

Mushrooms are also very effective in preventing breast and prostrate cancer due to the presence of beta glucans and conjugated linoleic acid as they have anti carcinogenic effects. 

Mushrooms contain Vitamin D and are the only food source which gives Vitamin D. As we know that Vitamin D is very important for bone health so mushrooms can be a good choice to avoid any bone disease. 

Studies show that selenium in mushrooms helps to lower the risk of bladder cancer. This mineral also works as antioxidant and protect the body from the damage of free radicals.

Mushrooms contain considerable amounts of Vitamin B complex which helps to boost the metabolism, and is also required for many bodily functions like good hair and skin, digestion, energy production, functioning of nervous system and to form red blood cells. Mushrooms contain B1 (thiamine) which controls the release of energy from carbohydrates which is required for the normal functioning of brain and nervous system, Vitamin B2(riboflavin) which helps to maintain healthy RBC count and gives good vision and healthy skin, Vitamin B3 (Niacin) helps in the release of energy from proteins, fat and carbohydrates which helps to make good digestive and nervous system, Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) which helps in the production of hormones, Vitamin B9 (folate) which are essential for the formation of RBC , WBC and for the fetal growth and development, Biotin which is essential for the metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates.
